Your car cost more than some houses, and right now it’s sitting on the shoulder of Old Cutler Road with a warning light that looks very expensive. Deep breath. Getting an exotic car towed safely mostly comes down to two things: the right truck and the right information.
Short answer: Exotic and luxury cars should always ride on a flatbed, so no wheels touch the road and nothing scrapes. Tell the dispatcher the make, model, drivetrain and ride height, and check your owner’s manual for tow mode. Road Rapid tows exotic, luxury and custom cars on a flatbed 24/7: call (305) 701-5121 for a free estimate.
Why do exotic cars need a flatbed?
- All-wheel drive: many exotics and high-end cars are all-wheel drive. Towing them with two wheels rolling can strain the drivetrain.
- Low ground clearance: front lips, splitters and diffusers sit inches off the ground. A wheel lift can scrape them.
- Expensive wheels and tires: on a flatbed, they don’t roll and they don’t touch the road.
- Damage after a breakdown or accident: a flatbed carries the whole car, so a damaged wheel or suspension isn’t loaded during the tow.
What should I tell the dispatcher?
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Make, model and year | Size, weight and known towing points |
| All-wheel or rear-wheel drive | Confirms that a flatbed is the right choice |
| Lowered or stock ride height | Low cars may need a gentler loading angle |
| Does it start, roll and steer? | A car that won’t roll or steer needs a different setup |
| Electric or hybrid? | Many need a special tow or transport mode |
| Where it should go | Your dealer, a specialist shop or your garage |
How do I get the car ready for the tow?
- Check the owner’s manual for the towing section. Many cars have a tow or transport mode that releases the parking brake.
- Find the screw-in tow eye if your car has one. It’s often in the trunk with the jack or the tire kit.
- If the car is electric or a hybrid, follow the manual’s towing steps exactly.
- Take out valuables, garage remotes and anything loose in the cabin.
- Note or photograph any existing scratches or damage before the car is loaded.
What should I do while I wait?
- If the car is on the road, turn on the hazard lights and move it off the road only if it’s safe to do so.
- Wait away from traffic, behind a barrier or well off the shoulder.
- Don’t try to push a heavy or low car yourself.
- If anyone is hurt, call 911 first.
Florida’s Move Over law requires drivers to move over a lane, or slow to 20 mph below the posted limit, for stopped tow trucks and disabled vehicles with warning lights.
Can a luxury SUV or an electric car go on a wheel lift?
Sometimes, depending on the drivetrain and what the manual says. When in doubt, the flatbed is the safe answer, and it’s what we use for luxury, exotic and custom cars. Everyday front- or rear-wheel drive cars can often go on a wheel lift, which is usually the more affordable option. See car towing for the difference.
